Eugenius!
The Other Palace
29/09/19
Socially awkward Eugene, a geeky comic book writer, suffers from bullying at school and takes refuge in the world of his creation, superhero Tough-Man. But with the support of his friends Janey – who has a crush on him – and Feris, he manages to rise beyond the stars when he and his vision are discovered by Hollywood producer Lex and his assistant Theo. Little does the protagonist know that his imaginary characters are real, and that he must rise to become the hero of his own story to save the world from the threat of the Evil Lord Hector.
Rob Houchen makes his premiere as Eugene, offering an honest and powerful performance as the loveable cartoon-drawing geek. Laura Baldwin and Daniel Buckley both reprise their roles as best friends, Janey and Feris; maintaining all the heart and masterful delivery from the original production. Neil McDermott has been newly cast as the Evil Lord Hector, providing a fresh and comedic take on the arch nemesis and supervillain, and a hilarious Scott Paige provides us with tremendous comedy as the flamboyant Theo Schlong along with Emily Tierney in the role of Carrie also proving some hilarious moments within the show. The ensemble in this show were also incredible proving amazing vocals and dance routines.
A stand out of the show for me was the duet performed by Rob Houchen and Laura Baldwin, delievering a a stunning performance with powerful vocals and amazing chemistry.
What really makes this show so special, however, is the irresistible tongue-in-cheek humour and the exceptionally talented cast, directed with extraordinary attention to detail by Ian Talbot. Aaron Renfree's choreographies and Darren Lord's musical direction are stunning and each song is followed by the loud cheering and clapping of the audience.
The ambitions of Eugenius to become a cult are justified by a final standing ovation. Hysterically funny and impeccably written, this is the musical that everyone can fall in love with.
