Waitress is based upon the 2007 film of the same name and tells the story of Jenna Hunterson, an expert pie-maker who longs to get out of her small town and her relationship with her husband Earl. When Jenna unexpectedly becomes pregnant, she begins an affair with her gynaecologist, Dr. Pomatter. Looking for ways out, she sees a pie contest and its grand prize as her chance. Featuring original music and lyrics by 7-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles, Waitress has been a smash hit since it began its West End run in February 2019.
It’s not only amazing ‘what baking can do’, but also it’s amazing what a group of incredibly talented people can do, to put on a show as beautiful as Waitress.
The story is complicated yet simple as is twisted through the lives of the three waitresses, mainly focusing on the newly pregnant Jenna (Katharine McPhee), but also giving Becky (Marisha Wallace) and Dawn (Laura Baldwin) their time to shine, through witty comments and impressive ballads.
Composed by the impeccably talented Sara Bareilles her music is just one ingredient to making the perfect show. Her lyrics are able to capture the strengths and weaknesses of the characters within the space of minutes. Despite her pop background, she is able to piece together and develop the characters with words that last with the audience. Her songs are extremely catchy and you’re singing them for days on end. She is able to bring a comedic side to a dark story.
